Did you know...
In a survey of teen drinkers, 65% said they got alcohol from family members or friends.
Most teens report that alcohol is easy to get – including 62 percent of eighth graders, 83 percent of sophomores, and 92 percent of seniors.
Marijuana smoke contains 50-70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.
Talking about difficult subjects like drinking, smoking, and drugs is not a five-minute talk. It’s about building an ongoing dialogue and taking advantage of teachable moments.
Students whose parents clearly expect their children to abstain are 400% more likely to abstain than other students.
If parents talk to children early and often about the dangers of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol before they are faced with difficult choices, they’ll be more likely to avoid rather than use.

Aloha! Welcome to our website. The North Hawaii Drug-Free Coalition is a regional network of community individuals, groups and agency representatives from the districts of Kohala, Waikoloa, Waimea and Hamakua. Our goals are to:

  • Establish and strengthen community collaboration.

  • Reduce substance abuse among youth.

  Our Mission Statement:

The members of the North Hawaii Drug-Free Coalition facilitate coordination and collaborative action among communities, organizations and government agencies to prevent and reduce substance abuse* among children, adolescents and over time among adults.

* This term includes but is not limited to such drugs of abuse as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, crystal methamphetamine (“ICE”), and narcotics.

The goals of our mission will be met by addressing the factors in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.

Indicators of Success (i.e. Four Core Measures):

We monitor the reduction of youth using substances by student surveys that track the progress of the following Four Core Measures:

  • Delay the age at which youth begin to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Decrease the number of youth who are using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in the past 30 days.
  • Increase youth perception of personal harm associated with using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Increase the frequency of parents who express their disapproval of youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
To be successful, Coalition members join hands and hearts to work together, develop and share resources, build collective influence and create synergistic solutions. This website provides information useful to all community members as we plan and carry out our strategies to bring a clear and consistent message to youth to empower them to make healthy choices in their lives.
